2027 plan transition

Medicare Advantage automatically switching your plan for 2027?

A blank notice rests over two sage green folders on a sunlit desk

An insurer may be allowed to move an eligible member into a designated successor plan without a new application. What happens if you do nothing depends on whether your plan is renewing, being combined, changing its service area, or ending.

Start with your notice

Find the exact 2027 plan before deciding

Check your current plan ID, any proposed successor ID, your residential address, and the wording of the insurer’s letter. A CMS crosswalk records a plan relationship; it does not prove your personal enrollment or eligibility.

  1. Read the whole letterLook for renewal, consolidation, nonrenewal, and effective-date language.
  2. Identify the exact plansRecord contract, plan, and segment IDs if available.
  3. Confirm enrollmentAsk the insurer which plan will cover you on January 1 if you take no action.

What happens if you do nothing?

There is no single answer. The outcome depends on your exact plan, location, and the rules that apply to its transition.

Possible 2027 plan outcomes
What is happeningPossible result without actionWhat to confirm
Ordinary renewalEnrollment generally continues in the renewed plan.2027 costs, benefits, network, and eligibility.
Consolidated renewalEligible members may continue in a designated successor without reapplying.Exact successor, eligibility, and changed terms.
Service-area reductionMembers in retained areas may continue; a move in a dropped area needs separate review.Your residential address, written notice, and whether a limited continuation arrangement applies.
Nonrenewal without an applicable successorMedicare says you generally return to Original Medicare when the MA coverage ends unless you join another MA plan.End date, election period, and prescription coverage.

An insurer offering a different plan does not, by itself, mean you are automatically enrolled in it. Ask whether you must actively elect it.

How to check your situation

  1. Read the complete notice

Find the 2026 plan name and ID, any 2027 plan name and ID, effective date, service-area language, and action deadline. An Annual Notice of Change describes next year’s terms; it alone does not establish nonrenewal.

  2. Check the recorded plan relationship

Use the official CMS 2027 plan crosswalk. Our free comparison can show the published transition for supported non-SNP Medicare Advantage plans with Part D. Neither source verifies your individual enrollment.

  3. Confirm with the insurer and Medicare

Call the number on your member card. Ask: “What exact contract, plan, and segment will I be enrolled in on January 1, 2027 if I do nothing? Does my address remain eligible? Must I submit an election?” If the answers conflict, call 1-800-MEDICARE.

  4. Review coverage before accepting a replacement

Confirm your doctors and hospitals with the exact plan and providers. Check medications, pharmacy, cost sharing, medical maximum out-of-pocket, and any ongoing treatment authorizations. An administrative transition does not establish any of these details.

Two CMS records show why classification matters

The October 1, 2026 CMS crosswalk shows different plan-level outcomes. These examples do not establish any member’s personal enrollment or coverage.

Consolidated renewal

Aetna Medicare Signature Care

H0628-017-0 · Franklin County, Ohio

CMS classifies this plan as a consolidated renewal and records H0628-017 as the successor contract and plan ID. The unchanged ID does not prove unchanged benefits.

No recorded successor

Wellcare Simple

H1032-237-0 · Miami-Dade County, Florida

CMS classifies this record as a terminated or nonrenewed contract and does not list a successor. Affected members still need to verify their notices and individual options.

Enrollment dates and other rights

The regular Medicare enrollment period is October 15–December 7. Medicare lists a separate Special Enrollment Period for a nonrenewed MA contract from December 8 through the last day of February of the next year. Other termination or service-area events can have different rules. Check Medicare’s Special Enrollment Period guide and your notice before relying on a date.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment runs January 1–March 31 for people enrolled in Medicare Advantage. If nonrenewal leaves you in Original Medicare on January 1, do not assume that period lets you join a new MA plan; ask Medicare which election period applies.

If you are considering Original Medicare plus Medigap, check Medicare’s Medigap purchasing rules or ask your State Health Insurance Assistance Program. Guaranteed-issue rights depend on the circumstances and are not created merely by a plan consolidation.
